Applied Materials USA and IIT Bombay to collaborate
June 4, 2009 11:02:09Applied Materials, Inc., the global leader in Nanomanufacturing Technology™ solutions today announced that it would strengthen the scope of its research collaborations with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, one of the seven higher institutes of technology in the country. Applied Materials previously endowed the “Applied Materials Nanomanufacturing Laboratory” at IIT Bombay in November 2007, donating equipment valued at US $ 7.5 million to the Laboratory. Subsequent to the endowment of the Laboratory, Applied Materials and IIT Bombay have collaborated on R&D in the areas of semiconductor technology, including on the development of state-of-the art flash memory, photovoltaic and electrochemical energy conversion devices. The Laboratory serves as a centre of excellence to promote and catalyze research activity and is contributing to the creation of an environment that can help to nurture and promote the nanomanufacturing industry in India. To cement this successful collaboration further and expand the scope of collaborative R&D projects, an MoU will be signed between Applied Materials and IIT Bombay. A part of this new collaboration, Applied Materials intends to donate an additional US $ 1.5 Million (over a period of three years) to the IIT Bombay. . Dr. Mark Pinto, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice-President of Applied Materials said, “I am delighted that the Applied Materials Nanomanufacturing Laboratory is now fully functional, and has been producing some exciting results. Our interaction with the faculty and students at IIT Bombay has been extremely fruitful, and we are looking to build on our success by expanding our relationship further.” He continued, “Applied’s goal is to partner with leading institutions in India, such as IIT Bombay, and to serve as a catalyst in the development of India’s nanomanufacturing eco-system by bringing together people, technology and resources to advance our industry in India and around the world.” Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director of IIT Bombay said, “ IIT Bombay values research interactions with global Industry leaders like Applied Materials and we are grateful to them for the Laboratory enabled by their generous endowment. This Laboratory has been, for us, a remarkable example of industry-academia collaboration, which has allowed our faculty and students to engage in cutting edge research. We look forward to an expanded collaboration with Applied Materials in future years.” The equipment donated in 2007 consisted of Applied Materials cluster Tools for different modules (such as Rapid Thermal, Lower Pressure CVD, High k, DPN, RIE, Ashing Chamber, PVD Chamber, Degas Chamber, Preclean Chamber) and had advanced semiconductor manufacturing process capabilities and applications. It complemented the equipment obtained by the Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics at IIT Bombay, which was established through a grant from the Ministry of Communications & IT, Government of India.
