    New study from Giessen University

Mumbai, July 2, 2009 – A recent study carried out on behalf of specialty chemicals group LANXESS has demonstrated the effectiveness of the disinfectant Preventol CD 601 against the swine flu viral strain. “The test results from Giessen University show that Preventol CD 601 can also play a major role in the fight against swine flu, which has now been classed as a pandemic. Our unique combination of three active ingredients has already proven extremely effective against other enveloped viruses such as the H5N1 bird flu virus,” says Dietmar Schlegel, market segment manager for Disinfection in LANXESS’s Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit. The viral strain responsible for swine flu is an A viral strain (H1N1) from the Orthomyxoviridae family, which also includes bird flu.

Preventol CD 601 functions extremely well as a bactericide, fungicide and general virucide. While it is used exclusively in the professional sector, its active ingredients are also utilized in consumer products such as household cleaners and toiletries. “It is this consumer-oriented sector that offers MPP strong opportunities for growth, despite the global slump in demand, and helps compensate for the downturn in the construction industry, for example,” says Schlegel. “Preventol active ingredients form the basis for large numbers of consumer products, whether for 10 million liters of disinfectant cleaner in Brazil or 400 million bars of antibacterial soap in the United States. When the World Health Organization and other key institutions recommend thorough and frequent hand washing with soap and water as the most effective and easiest measure against the spread of influenza viruses, the increased hygiene awareness among consumers is also quickly reflected in sales.”

In the next few months, the Business Unit Material Protection Products (MPP) expects significant growth for its active ingredients in the Disinfection & Personal Care segment. Preventol CD 601 is part of the group of phenolic active ingredients and formulations (phenolics) that make up around 20 percent of sales in the MPP business unit. In this area LANXESS is one of the leading manufacturers worldwide. Disinfection is the most important and fastest growing biocidal application in phenolics. Total sales for the business unit were less than EUR 200 million in fiscal 2008. MPP is part of the Performance Chemicals segment of LANXESS, which recorded sales of EUR 1.93 billion in fiscal 2008.

LANXESS markets a wide range of preservatives and biocides for almost all branches of industry, including wood protection, paints and coatings, construction, health care, hygiene products and foodstuffs. Detailed information on the Preventol product range is available at www.protectedbypreventol.com.

LANXESS is a leading specialty chemicals company with sales of EUR 6.58 billion in 2008 and currently around 14,600 employees in 23 countries. The company has operations at 44 sites worldwide. The core business of LANXESS is the development, manufacturing and marketing of plastics, rubber, intermediates and specialty chemicals.
